Developed to complement the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 and to challenge the McDonnell Douglas F-15 for air superiority missions, the Sukhoi Su-27 featured the Soviet Union's first fly-by-wire control system. It is a highly agile, long-range, heavy fighter aircraft that has proven itself in a number of conflicts on opposing sides, including the Eritrea-Ethiopia war (1999) and Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine (since 2022).
