Orders for the F-2, developed jointly by Japan and the USA, have been restricted due to high unit costs. Due to ongoing disputes with China over islands in the East China Sea, the aircraft plays an important role in air operations of the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). During the 2011 tsunami, 18 F-2 aircraft were damaged.
