Walrus – kit from LEGO® bricks

The walrus is at home in the icy waters of the Arctic and cuts a much better figure there than on land. Nevertheless, the large seal species is anything but slow and defenseless in an emergency. With the help of their very flexible flippers, the animals, which weigh up to 1,200 kilograms, can move well even on solid ground.

A particularly useful accessory are the canine teeth, which can be up to one meter long and which both males and females are blessed with. Even hungry polar bears respect these tusks. They can also be used to open up breathing holes or to help them lift themselves up when going onto land. In territorial fights, a demonstrative display is often enough to put a less well-equipped rival to flight.

The only disadvantage of the tusks is that they are attractive to non-native hunters who are after maritime ivory. Fortunately, poaching does not currently pose a threat to the species.
