With its eight rattling machine guns and thundering Merlin engine, the Spitfire was a symbol of hope and victory for the Allies, and panic and surrender for the Axis. Even in modern times, the Spitfire captivates aviation fans and the casual observer alike.
From its introduction in the 1930s to its heyday, the Battle of Britain, and far beyond, the Spitfire was revered by its pilots. Today, there are just under 60 aircraft still in flightworthy condition.
