The Sopwith Camel of the Sopwith Aviation Company is considered the most successful British fighter aircraft of the First World War. 5,490 of them were built and used by the Allies in 1917 and 1918.
The actual name of the biplane with two pairs of wings stacked on top of each other was Sopwith Biplane F.1. But the nickname Camel, which the aircraft received because of the hump-like machine gun fairings, stuck better over the years and replaced the official name.
Fans of the comic series “The Peanuts” will also be familiar with the Sopwith Camel. It is used in the English paperback “Snoopy and His Sopwith Camel”. During a grandiose dog dream, Snoopy’s doghouse mutates into an airplane of this type. Snoopy uses it as a daring pilot to fight in air battles against the Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen in a Fokker Dr.1.
