The Merlin engine was developed by Rolls-Royce in 1933 and soon found its way into the Supermarine Spitfire. The large displacement initially gave the unit an output of over 1,000 hp, but this was doubled over the course of its lifetime.
In addition to the Spitfire, the engine was also used in many other aircraft, including the de Havilland Hornet. And in the USA, over 50,000 P-51 Mustangs from North American received a license-built engine, while even tanks were equipped with a version of the engine.
This engine was best known from the Spitfire; the majority of the 20,000 aircraft were ultimately equipped with it.
