It was in 1848 that the American naturalist Titian Peale discovered a new species of dolphin and gave it his name. It has a striking light and dark pattern and a distinctive, dark dorsal fin.

The lively animals like to form groups of up to a hundred of their own kind. Together they hunt for squid and shrimp or have fun surfing in the wake of ships. Like other dolphin species, they are not afraid of people.

Peale's dolphins are found in the coastal waters of southern South America. Even 170 years after their discovery, we still don't know much about them or their natural enemies, but pollution and fishing pose an existential threat to dolphins in general.
