The northern lapwing – native to temperate Eurosiberia, but found in many places as a migratory bird – is the national bird of Ireland. Its German name is a derivation of its call, which sounds something like "kiju-wit". In Dutch, the lapwing is called "Kiewit".
The lapwing is not sexually dimorphic, which means that the females are generally about the same size and color as the males. Only the black, two-pointed crest on the head is larger in the males.
In earlier times, this species of bird was also in great distress in Germany because its eggs were considered a delicacy. But today, hunting for lapwing eggs is banned throughout the European Union. Only in the Dutch province of Friesland is it still a popular sport, but the eggs may not be collected. Instead, the clutches on farmland are marked so that tractors can drive around them.
