The Japanese manufacturer Nakajima Aircraft Company built around 30,000 of its Sakae-12 aircraft radial engines between 1939 and 1945. It was used, among other things, in the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the famous Japanese long-range fighter aircraft.
The key feature of the engine, which was highly innovative at the time, is its star-shaped arrangement of pistons. Its great advantage is the resulting compactness. The Sakae-12 had two rows of seven pistons each. If a more powerful engine was needed, additional rows of pistons were simply added.
