The Japanese long-range fighter aircraft was already a success before the surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor in 1941. The war-deciding event is still infamous today and was made into a film in 2001 with Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnett.

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was fast, powerful, maneuverable and had an enormous range of 2,600 km. 11,000 units were built by 1945 after it had proven itself in combat against China shortly after its first flight in 1939.

The lightness of the Japanese carrier-based fighter was a great advantage, but at the same time its greatest weakness: it broke easily and could not carry heavy armament. However, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero became a legend for its kamikaze attacks. The other side of this coin is that thousands of young Japanese soldiers lost their lives in this way, especially in the last two years of the Second World War.
