The cherry red colour scheme of this 1500-volt electric locomotive, known as BB rouge, became the defining feature of the Le Capitole. The BB 9200 class – of which it was a variant – was specially developed for express trains. The BB 9291 was in the top range with a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Unlike other locomotives in its class, the Le Capitole had single-arm pantographs instead of the usual pantographs. In 1967 it became the first European locomotive to regularly travel at 200 km/h and from 1970 it was used on the TEE trains between Paris and Toulouse. This example in the collection of the Cité du Train museum was built at the very end of the production period (1958-1964), during which a total of 92 units rolled out of the factory halls.
