The SR-71, developed in the late 1950s and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and NASA until the late 1990s, still holds the records for the aircraft with the highest altitude (almost 26,000 meters) and speed (Mach 3.3). "SR" stands for "Strategic Reconnaissance". It was nicknamed "Blackbird" because of its black paintwork. Since the aircraft had to withstand extremely high temperatures, the fuselage was made primarily of titanium, while the windshields of the two-seater cockpit were made of quartz. The pilots also had to wear pressure suits.

Only 32 Blackbirds were built, of which 12 were accidents. Since none of them were ever shot down, they were highly successful spy planes. Their main task, spotting enemy activities, has since been taken over by satellites and drones.
