The Germans called the heavy US fighter aircraft, which was manufactured by the Lockheed Corporation from 1941 to 1945, the "fork-tailed devil". It owes its almost reverential nickname to its twin tail booms, a design that is as unusual as it is striking.

The P-38 was not only used for aerial combat, but also for reconnaissance. In the latter role, it was designated F-4 or F-5. The most famous pilot of a Lockheed F-5B was Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the very man who rose to world fame with his book "The Little Prince". He was less fortunate as an airplane pilot. On July 31, 1944, he was shot down south of Marseille. Saint-Exupéry was initially thought to be missing until a bracelet that clearly belonged to him was found in the sea in 1998, and two years later the wreckage of the plane.
