The Kermode bear, also known as the ghost bear, is neither an albino nor a polar bear, but actually a black bear. Its white or cream-colored fur is the result of a recessive gene mutation, which both parents must carry.
Kermode bears live like other bears, hunting salmon and nibbling on trees. Observations suggest that they appear more docile than normal black bears. They are found exclusively in the temperate rainforests of the Canadian province of British Columbia.
The exact living conditions of this rare bear species have not yet been researched, but perhaps their concentrated presence in one place actually has something to do with the spiritual attitude of the indigenous people who still live there. The Tsimshian once declared the Kermode bears to be sacred. They did not hunt them and did not mention them to strangers. This meant that poachers and fur traders did not even know that they existed.
