The Indian rhinoceros is actually a harmless herbivore weighing up to two tons. The so-called shell is simply a fold in the four-centimeter-thick skin that improves mobility and thermoregulation. The horn, which can be up to 60 centimeters long, is very rarely used by its owner for aggressive purposes. The striking headdress resembles hair or hooves in its basic structure and is made of keratin.
The Rhinoceros species has existed for around 3.3 million years, but it has only been fighting for survival for 300 years. Initially, their habitat was reduced to make way for agricultural land. Hunting, which is popular not only among Europeans, did the rest. When there were only 200 Indian rhinos left, they were finally placed under protection. Poaching, which is solely for the horn, which is supposedly of medicinal value, is still a major problem. But the population is slowly increasing again with the help of conservation programs.
