The F-14 Tomcat, developed by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation in the early 1970s, was primarily intended as an air superiority fighter. Its use was mainly directed against other fighter aircraft. Speed and maneuverability therefore played a major role.
Two engines ensured high reliability. The enormous range of over 3,000 kilometers was achieved with two additional external tanks. In addition, there was the option of aerial refueling.
From 1972 to 1992, the United States of America used this level of technical sophistication almost exclusively for itself. The only foreign customer was the Imperial Iranian Air Force before the revolution there. However, some of the 79 fighter jets delivered are still in use today.
