From 1964 to 1968, the American car manufacturer Ford built a racing car that succeeded in knocking Ferrari off the Le Mans throne. The Ford GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for four years in a row starting in 1966. Ferrari can boast that the previous winning streak had lasted six years.

Completely unexpectedly, Ford introduced a new super racing car in 2015: the GT Le Mans. Commentators laughed at the idea, but Ford still had it. They sent four chassis to the 2016 race, and they finished first, second, fourth and ninth in the LM GTE-Pro class.

Henry Ford II, grandson of the company founder, had wanted to buy Ferrari in the early 1960s, before the victories. He did not live to see the new triumph; he died in 1987.
