The European bison is not exactly a common sight, but its appearance is unmistakable: reddish-brown color, two short curved horns, body as heavy as a truck, shoulders as strong as a wrestler, eyes as gentle as a lamb. The latter should not be relied upon.

The European bison – also known as the European wisent – almost became extinct: in 1927, the last wild specimen was shot in the Caucasus. But a few of the once wild cattle still lived in zoos and animal enclosures. They were cared for, looked after and, above all, bred.

The first bison were released into the wild in 1952, and many more followed. Their population has grown significantly since then. Today there are thousands of these impressive creatures, including in Germany. They live in small herds of 12 to 20 animals, just like in the Middle Ages. It's hard to believe, but they all descend from a single dozen zoo animals.
