This aircraft type was built in just five copies especially for the Great Air Race from England to Australia in 1934. And for all those who have long suspected that not everything was better in the past: at 50,000 British pounds per aircraft, the DH.88 cost around ten times more than was estimated in the first draft.
The manufacturer was not successful in getting the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom interested in its development of a fast bomber version. But the De Havilland Aircraft Company remained stubborn and developed the successor, the DH.98 Mosquito, itself. 7,700 machines were built between 1940 and 1950 and used by various nations during the Second World War.
But back to the DH.88 Comet, because it certainly deserves attention. Because it actually won the race it was built for and because it broke aviation records. And perhaps also because two of the five examples later proved to be very useful as French mail planes.
