Colourful, shimmering plumage, ranging from cobalt blue to turquoise depending on the light, and an orange-brown breast – the kingfisher is of unmistakable beauty. And for those who can hear better than see: the call of this magnificent bird, barely larger than a sparrow, is piercingly loud and high-pitched when it flies over a body of water.
The kingfisher is an excellent indicator of whether a body of water is healthy. If it has settled there, everything is definitely fine. However, it prefers to retreat to steep slopes to nest.
In the Middle Ages, people actually believed that a dead kingfisher placed between valuables would encourage them to reproduce. However, this has since been proven to be a mistake.
