Its German name is a little misleading, because the purple grackle, as it is called in German, is black. But if you look closely, its plumage shimmers in bright blue to purple. Its bright yellow eyes are striking. It is impossible to miss it when it noisily arrives at its sleeping place in the middle of a large group in typical sparrow-like fashion.
Common grackles belong to the suborder of songbirds, which is also misleading. Witnesses report almost painful noises that are more reminiscent of a rusty gate opening. This is certainly one reason why no one in the purple grackle's North American homeland would think of keeping one as a pet.
The beauty at second glance is extremely versatile when it comes to food. It likes nuts, berries, insects, worms, frogs and is not afraid of getting wet feet when fishing. In winter, the grackle likes to invade grain fields, in large groups of course. If it is very hungry, it does not shy away from stealing food from other birds.
