Spacious, handy, economical – the appearance is not important. These were the specifications given by the Citroën director for a new vehicle in 1934. The designer succeeded in implementing the specifications perfectly, including in terms of appearance.
When the Citroën 2CV was finally introduced in 1948, the initial plans had been revised and improved. Nevertheless, the trade press only smiled mildly. A Dutch journalist even dared to compare it to an ugly duck. But the triumph of the minimalist anti-status symbol could not be stopped.
Over five million 2CVs rolled off the production line between 1949 and 1990 as sedans or delivery vans. Special models designed to keep interest in a particular vehicle type alive were also well received. A particularly beautiful special model of the 2CV, which was popular far beyond France, was the Citroën 2CV Charleston. 8,000 of them were produced in 1980 and boasted an elegant black and wine-red paint job and houndstooth upholstery, in the style of the 1920s. In 1982, the black and yellow version was added, which was replaced just one year later by the midnight grey and mist grey variant.
