Andean cock-of-the-rock – kit from LEGO® bricks

This pretty ornamental bird is – as the name suggests – at home high up in the South American Andes. It is the heraldic animal of Peru.

The male's bright orange-red coloring is very striking, and with a body length of 35 to 38 centimeters, it is not that small. Nevertheless, it is a master at hiding from people.

The best chance of spotting a cock-of-the-rock, if you like climbing high up in the Andes, is in the spring during the breeding season. That's when the males meet in groups in a clearing, raise their crests and call loudly for the females.
